The Nora Awards were named in honor of our National / International Founder Nora de Hoyos Comstock, and recognizes Comadres who exemplify the virtues of Loyalty, Generosity, Sisterhood and Kindness.
We want you to Meet the Finalists before the big day. Quotes from their nominations are below:
Comadre of the Year Finalists
Laura Esparza
Comadre Laura is a great leader in the Las Comadres & Friends National Latino Book Club. She has integrity for all and cares about the Comadres as a group and individually. She brings us together to help each other and to come together as a community.
Magda Esustace
Magda is the ultimate Ambassador for Las Comadres group I Austin. She recognizes the healing power of the sisterhood that is our South Austin Las Comadres Book Club. And, besides serving as club facilitator, has brought many lonely souls in search of a social network into our groups.
Yadhira González-Taylor
Yadhira’s sense of what is right and fair and generous is what makes her the ultimate Comadre. She created a Bronx chapter of Comadres to bring women together not only to network and support each other, but to help them reinvent themselves.
Terry Saucedo
Terry is a very compassionate and warm person, keeps us all updated on new events with Las Comadres and is always ready to lend a helping hand. You could say she is the glue that keeps us all together throughout the years.
Theresa Varela
Comadre Theresa has a level of compassion that is profound and honestly, rare. She works daily with an unrepresented group of women that really are invisible in our society, women who have no voice, no homes, and some of which deal with mental health issues. She rolls up her sleeves, moves forward getting, and manages to maintain that grace with the rest of the world she encounters.
Community Service Award Finalists
Dr. Charley Ferrer
Dr. Charley Ferrer was named a Hero of Staten Island (NY) for her work with Breast Cancer Patients in her community. We concur wholeheartedly, as she has done wonderful work with Las Comadres. Dr. Charley has proven her loyalty and generosity to Las Comadres and her community. She is a true hero.
Clara Galvano Rivera
Clara has been a long-time member of Comadres and over the years has diligently committed herself to work in making Comrades a more robust community here in New York. Clara’s care of others and commitment to helping her community, empathy and boundless energy is a special quality that she brings to all events and programs and more importantly to others.
Kim Montoya
Comadre Kim has been dedicated to Las Comadres Para Las Americas since she joined in 2013. She moved to Topeka, Kansas and started a Las Comadres Heartland-Topeka Network book club. When the Covid19 pandemic closed the libraries, she combined the Heartland-Topeka Network with our Denver Network and started the Zoom meetings.
The Friend of Las Comadres Award
